Keep Us In Line

If you’re curious about roller derby, don’t be shy! HVDD is always on the lookout for volunteer refs and NSOs (non-skating officials).

Referees

Like our players, HVDD refs are volunteer skaters who happen to be experts on WFTDA rules. They ensure safety and fair play during bouts and scrimmages, and can be either male or female. If you don’t know the rules, or don’t know how to skate, we’ll teach you. Happy Valley Derby Darlins offers a two-week boot camp for both skaters and officials, along with continued mentorship after the boot camp ends.

Non-Skating Officials

Non-skating officials, or NSOs, also keep us rolling smoothly. They maintain order during bouts, keep score, and track stats, penalties, and timeouts. Like refs, NSOs can be any gender.

Benefits of Volunteering

Officiating comes with lots of perks. Besides getting your very own derby name, you’ll be able to:

  • Attend bouts for free – Enjoy the action from the best seats in the house.
  • Learn more about derby – In a fast-growing sport like roller derby, you’ll be first in line for breaking news.
  • Make new friends and join our derby family – We love officials! They’re a valued member of the team and often join us for practices and parties.
  • Hone skating skills and increase your confidence –¬†Get out of your comfort zone and embrace a rough-and-tumble alter ego.
