Next Recruitment Night

Date: February 26, 2018
Location: Noah Webster Academy 205 E 400 S, Orem, UT 84058

What to Bring: Just yourself! This is an off-skates informational meeting—no gear necessary.
Time: 8:00 pm

Do you have what it takes to be a Derby Darlin? We’re happy to offer four groups for adult skaters: boot camp, a recreational team, home teams, and the travel team. These levels will help you learn to skate, form strong friendships, and—if you choose—compete against advanced skaters and outside teams.

Skaters under age 18 are invited to join the Happy Valley Derby Prodigies, our junior league. All genders are welcome!

All adult skaters should:

  • Identify as female
  • Be at least 18 years old

Boot Camp – For New Skaters

If you don’t know how to skate, no worries! We offer a 4-week training course (open to skaters and officials) throughout the year to teach skating essentials and whip you into shape. Our trainers will give you encouragement, advice, and derby love as you learn the basics. We’re excited to meet you!

Recreational Team

One you’ve nailed the basics, you’ll move on to the Bridal Veil Dolls, our rec team. Dolls have the opportunity to skate with their peers for fun and fitness. There are no attendance requirements—just show up and play! It’s the ideal place for those who can’t commit to skating full-time, as well as new players looking to sharpen their skills.

Home Teams

Each skater has the chance to join a home team and compete against other home team players. These skaters should:

  • Possess determination, grit, and a can-do attitude.
  • Be willing to commit to at least 1 practice a week during the season.
  • Be able to volunteer a small amount of time each month supporting bout production and committee work.

Once you’ve passed assessments, you’ll have the opportunity to be placed on a home team. Plus, you can try out for our all-star travel team, the Molly Morbids.

Travel Team

Each Molly Morbid skater also plays for a home team. This means that travel team skaters have additional attendance requirements to meet, as well as greater expectations when it comes to athleticism, strategic knowledge, and leadership.

But don’t let that scare you. The travel team is a great place to make lasting friendships and amp up your derby skills. Interested in making the team? Tryout information is made available to all active HVDD skaters.

For Transfer Skaters

If you’ve previously bouted with another league, or have skated for more than 3 months with a pre-bouting league, congrats! You’re eligible to transfer into HVDD. Please contact us (details below) to figure out the next steps. Generally, we assess transfer skaters after a 30-day trial period, but that restriction will be waived if it’s unnecessary. You’ll be assessed at the level you achieved in your previous league.

Getting Gear

Roller derby is a full-contact sport, so you’ll need to arm yourself with:

  • Quad (not inline) skates
  • Helmet
  • Knee and elbow pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Mouth guard

We know that gathering your gear can be an overwhelming process. If you have some items, great. If not, you don’t need to buy everything before Recruitment Night. That meeting will be informational only, and we’ll give you pointers on finding gear.
